I’m Sugar Free
So I should just let the cat out of the bag right away.
Hi my name is Cheryl and I’m a sugar free person.
Yep, that’s right. I don’t eat sugar. Like at all. Like no candy, no cookies, no pie, no birthday cake. Like no sugar. I’ve been sugar free since March of 2015. So at the time of this blog post, about a year and 2 months.
Typically the very next thing that comes out of someone’s mouth when I say that is “WHY?!?!?” Like what in the world is wrong with you woman??
I’m going to make a series out of these posts and share all about being sugar free and I’ll get into the deep reasons and all of that dirty stuff in a future post. But to put it in a nice little soundbite for you. I’m sugar free because I am a sugar addict. And cutting sugar out of my diet has “cured” me. Again, I’ll explain more about that later.
Quit Cold Turkey
Once I started doing some research and reading about sugar addiction, I knew it was something I had to try. Sort of sounded like a magic bullet and I don’t even believe in magic bullets but something about it just seemed to fit for me. So after our annual trip to Reno for March Madness in 2015, I just stopped. I stopped putting sugar in my coffee, started turning down sugary snacks, started eating more fruits and vegetables.
I thought I’m going to give this a try for I think it was 3 months when I first started out. Once the 3 months were up, I kept going.
Sugar Free is NOT for Everyone
I repeat – SUGAR FREE IS NOT FOR EVERYONE!!!! I don’t think I’m better than anyone because I don’t eat sugar. I don’t look down on people who do eat sugar. I don’t begrudge when someone eats strawberry shortcake or Christmas cookies. I’m glad they can have them. It’s just better for me to not have them. I don’t think everyone has to never have sugar. Some people are perfectly fine having a dessert here and there. I’m jealous of that.
Now when I say that I NEVER eat sugar, there are a handful of things that have tiny bits of sugar that is really hard to avoid.
- Pizza crust. Yeast needs sugar to for energy and growth. My pizza dough recipe has 1 teaspoon of sugar for 2 large pizza crusts.
- Pre-packaged breads ALL have sugar. I don’t eat that at home. But if I’m in a restaurant, I am not going to ask for a list of ingredients in the bread.
Those are just 2 examples. But going over this just now I actually can’t think of any others. I’ll get more into what I will and won’t eat in a future article so stay tuned.
I don’t ever want to be “preachy” about sugar to anyone. If people ask, I’ll share what I know. But I never want to shove it down someone else’s throat. So if you feel I’m being preachy, call a girl out on it. That is not my intention at all.
Finally, I definitely don’t plan on stopping (or starting to eat sugar) at this time. Future articles will include information on:
